M/I Homes: Is this your first M/I Home and what convinced you to choose M/I Homes over another builder?

Cindy Powers: This is my first M/I Home and there were several reasons for the choice. I first looked at a M/I Home in another neighborhood when I wasn’t quite ready to buy, but wanted to start looking around. Patrick was wonderful and treated me like a serious buyer and I immediately fell in love with everything about the home. Fast forward to a year later when I was ready and of course I went back. That neighborhood was full so I went to check out the new one they were working on and I’m SO glad I did! I worked with Patrick again and he was just as great the second time around.

M/I:  Are you happy with how your home turned out?

CP: Absolutely! The details really make all of the difference. My boss has a contractor’s license (not practicing) and came for a walk through before I signed the contract. I just knew he was going to be nit-picky but he just kept saying how well-built it was and how much he liked it.

M/I:  What is the name of your floorplan and what features of your home do you especially love?

CP:  My floorplan is the Andover II. I love how spacious it is–especially the layout from the kitchen to the living room. I also love the two huge closets in my bedroom and the spacious shower.

M/I:  Overall, how was your experience with M/I Homes?  Did you get to pick out your homesite and the floorplan you wanted to build, or had the home already been started?

CP:  My home was pretty much finished the first time that I saw it, but I wouldn’t change a thing! The features and colors are just perfect. I even love the color of the outside!

M/I:  Do you have any fun memories from the buying / building process?

CP:  The whole process went super fast and I’m glad for that! It almost felt like a dream from when I wandered in to take a look to waking up every morning in my new home.

M/I:  Was there something about your home that made you immediately know you wanted to move in?

CP:  Yes, the quality. It is so much nicer than anything else that I had looked at in the area. M/I Homes made it easy to become a reality.

M/I: What do you like about your neighborhood / community?

CP:  I really like the layout of the neighborhood and the fact that the beautiful pool just happens to be right in my backyard! The community is great—I love to walk and I am walking distance from several shops and restaurants. The interstate access is super convenient as well.

M/I:  Anything you would recommend to someone looking for a new home?

CP:  I would highly recommend M/I Homes due to their customer service as well as the fact that they handle everything for you! I didn’t have to search out a separate mortgage lender or closer; they even recommended a homeowner’s insurance agent that was just as wonderful. She already knew what they needed and took care of it all. The whole process was extremely smooth.

M/I:  What is your favorite memory in your new home thus far?

CP:  My favorite memory has been decorating the new space. It’s fun to bring the beautiful space to life.

M/I:  What is your favorite space in your new home?  Do you have any pictures of that space you would like to share?

CP:  I love how bright and airy the whole home is and I especially love the window in the bonus room, which is perfect for a reading nook. I don’t have pictures of that space yet because I am searching out the perfect comfy seating for that area.  When I find it I will most likely never leave!

M/I:  What was something that surprised you the most with building / moving into a new home?

CP:  I wouldn’t say it surprised me, but I love the fact that each and every thing is being used by me for the first time! Everything is so clean and shiny.

M/I:  Any additional items / stories you would like to share about your new home?

CP:  I just want to reiterate the customer service aspect. Patrick, our New Home Consultant, worked hard for me and was a joy to work with. When I did my walk-through with Al he was meticulous and thorough. From the beginning through move-in, everything went so smoothly.  Thank you M/I Homes!

This new “Happy Homeowners Interview” features The Morlan Family, who recently built their new home in Orlando.  Read below to hear about Morlan’s homebuilding journey with M/I Homes!

M/I Homes:  Is this your first M/I Home and what convinced you to choose M/I Homes over another builder?

Angelia Morlan: This is our second M/I home.  Our first home was an M/I Home.  It was about a year old when we bought it and we lived in it for 13 years.  We knew when we were ready for a new home, we wanted M/I Homes to build it again.  We never had any problems with our first home and knew that M/I Homes built a good, solid home.  We did not even consider another builder.

M/I: Are you happy with how your home turned out?

AM: Yes!  This is absolutely our dream home.  We decided to build from the ground up so we could get everything we wanted.  We have been in our new home for almost 2 months now and still can’t believe it is really ours.  You will hear the words “I love our house” several times a week as we arrive home from work or eating out.  We are taking our time decorating each room and enjoying every minute!

M/I: What is the name of your floorplan and what features of your home do you especially love?

AM: The floorplan we chose is called the Essex.  It has 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, and a bonus room on the second level.  We love the layout of the home and the great use of space utilized in this floorplan.  As far as features go, there are so many.  The one great thing we found with building with M/I Homes is that so many features that one may consider an upgrade are already included in the base model of any of the floorplans in our community.  We loved the brick pavers on the driveway and back patio, granite counter tops in the kitchen and master bath, the covered lanai, and the stone accent on the exterior.  These were not upgrades but came standard on the house.  Other features that we love include the master suite which is the size of a small apartment with a huge walk in closet and master bath.  We also love the large open living room, kitchen, and dining area with so many windows and a panoramic view of the golf course and tree line behind us.

M/I: Overall, how was your experience with M/I Homes? Did you get to pick out your home site and the floorplan you wanted to build, or had the home already been started?

AM: This was not our first experience living in an M/I Home, but it was our first experience building from the ground up.  It really was one of the best experiences we have ever had when it comes to building and buying a home.  We loved that we got to pick out the floorplan and the home site.  We actually looked at several M/I Home communities in our area but we kept coming back to Serenity at Redtail because the views were amazing.  Honestly, every home in the community has no one behind them and a lovely view of either a common area filled with beautiful trees, a lake, or the golf course.  We picked a lot with a view of Redtail golf course.  The best part is we get to see the sunrise to our left and the sunset to our right from our back lanai.  I am addicted to sunset pictures and have already taken quite a few.

M/I: Do you have any fun memories from the buying / building process?

AM: We loved visiting the construction site every week.  We could really see the quality of the work going into the house from the inside out.  Several times my husband and I brought our lawn chairs and sat on the back patio, watched the sunset, and talked about how we would decorate our new home.  We also loved visiting with Linda, our M/I Homes Sales Associate.  It was also a lot of fun working with Julie at the Design Center.  She had great ideas in interior design and really helped to make our vision of our dream home a reality.

M/I: What do you like about your neighborhood / community?

AM: The views are stunning.  A sense of peace fills you as soon as you drive in the neighborhood.  There is always a breeze and it just feels good to be there whether we are inside of our home or walking around the neighborhood.  We love seeing the wildlife almost on a daily basis.  We love that we can walk out of our back door and are steps away from the golf course.  We love that we feel like we are on vacation. We are away from all of the hustle and bustle of the city, but still close enough to entertainment and shopping.

M/I: Anything you would recommend to someone looking for a new home?

AM: Really look at the community you are considering to buy a home in.  M/I Homes does a great job with not just the quality of the construction of the home, but also with what is around your new home. We have beautiful trees, a golf course, and beautiful common areas for everyone in the community to enjoy.

M/I: What is your favorite memory in your new home thus far?

AM: We moved in the day before Thanksgiving.  Our neighbor, next door, invited us to spend the day with them since they knew we would be moving. It was great to enjoy a wonderful meal with them and to get to know them.  We feel very lucky that they are our neighbors.  We also will never forget spending our first Christmas in our new home.

M/I:  What is your favorite space in your new home? Do you have any pictures of that space you would like to share?

AM: My husband and son would say the man cave, AKA bonus room, it’s their favorite room in the house.  My favorite space is the back patio because of the amazing view.  I sit out there every evening.  I also really love our master suite.

M/I: What was something that surprised you the most with building/moving into a new home?

AM: I was surprised at how involved M/I Homes and our building superintendent allowed us to be.  We could come by and walk through the house anytime we wanted to and could ask questions and give input along the way.

M/I: Any suggestions you would give to someone building a new home with M/I Homes?

AM: Take a lot of pictures during the building process.  It is so neat to go back and look through them once you are in your home.  It was also helpful to have the pictures as a resource when making decorating decisions.

M/I: Any additional items / stories you would like to share about your new home?

AM: Our English Bulldog Yeti, loves his new home too.  When we first moved in, he ran laps up and down the long foyer and hallway.  His favorite space is our living room.  He sits in the same spot each night and watches TV with us.  He also enjoys sitting on the patio and watching the golfers and the Sandhill Cranes walk by.

Home Guide: Choosing the Right Doors for Your Home

doors-1

Apart from being the most important part of ensuring privacy, doors can greatly affect the overall style of your home. Whether they are inside or out, your choice and preferences about the door’s materials and design will elevate the looks of your home and affect its energy consumption. When remodeling or creating your home, consider a variety of different doors and their characteristics to decide which ones will fit your home the best.

doors-2

Types of Doors

There are plenty of types of doors, and you may think you have to opt for functionality over design. However, several types of doors offer you the best of both worlds by combining both functionality and design!

Sliding doors are most commonly made of wood, glass, or are lined with mirrors. People usually use them for their closets because they don’t occupy too much space. However, glass sliding doors are also used as part of the exterior when it comes to the entrance to the deck or a porch.

Pocket doors are similar to the sliding ones, but they actually slide into the wall, thus saving much more space. These are most commonly used inside the house and can create functional stylish space dividers for your dining room and kitchen.

Panel doors are the simplest and most popular doors for the house. They are usually made of wood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and can easily fit any classic style because of their classic patterns of square panels.

French doors fall into the category of elegant internal doors and they usually have a frame around a transparent panel. Also, they can have several such panels, which are usually filled with glass or some foggy translucent material. Besides being great for your kitchen or living room, these doors can make a big entrance into your home if used as the front door.

Barn doors have become a very popular part of the exterior design. They can perfectly fit in your home if its style is rather industrial or rustic. Also, you can use them in the interior if you have big spaces that need to be divided.

Consider the Materials

The materials will determine the durability and performance of the doors you choose. Additionally, they will affect both exterior and interior design of your home. There are plenty of materials you can choose from, but these several should be considered.

Solid wood is the most common material for the doors and its price and durability depend on the type of wood used. While cherry, mahogany, maple, pine, and other hard and soft woods are rarely used, the most common material is pine with 6 panels. Such doors are generally used on the exterior, but you can use them inside as well. However, they shouldn’t be used for the bathrooms, saunas, and damp spaces, since the wood expands and shrinks with the changes in humidity and temperature.

MDF, the material we mentioned earlier, is an engineered product which is mostly used for internal doors. It is stable and can be used for bathrooms and damp spaces if you purchase the moisture resistant variety; plus it’s smooth and easy to repaint for future renovations!

Metal and glass doors are elegant and can exude modernity. Thus they are often used both for the interior and exterior. However, they tend to be pricey. On the upside, they offer durability and protection for your home!

Choose Your Style

You should choose the door design according to the overall style of your home. However, you can mix and match a little in order to create a more fun and eclectic look and dynamic atmosphere, but try choosing same elements in order not to disturb the flow. Pay attention to the size of the room – avoid massive doors with plenty of ornaments in small rooms so it wouldn’t be overwhelmed. Also, small doors in big rooms can create a sense of bigger spaces, but the room might feel empty and unfinished.

doors-5

Insulation

Apart from elevating the looks of your home, doors can help you conserve energy. Depending on the material and framing, you will affect the amount of energy that is preserved or wasted, so always look for well insulated doors. Also, thick doors can isolate the sounds that enter or exit your house, which can change the atmosphere in your home depending on the amount of noise that is let in.

Even though picking doors seems easy, there are several things to be considered. The right materials, types and sizes of the doors can save you plenty of money and trouble with the noise, while upgrading the style of your home.

M/I Homes: Is this your first M/I Home and what convinced you to choose M/I Homes over another builder?

Tina and Lorenzo: Yes, this is our first M/I home.  We were able to see these townhomes being built from the ground up and felt that a quality home was being built.

M/I:  Are you happy with how your home turned out?

T&L: Yes, extremely happy and our home has exceeded our expectations.

M/I: What is the name of your floorplan and what features of your home do you especially love?

T&L: We have the Cardiff floorplan.  There are so many things about the home that we love, the hardwoord floors, upgrades in kitchen and bath, fireplace, full basement (we really needed after 34 years of marriage and 2 children) and the extra large 2-car garage.

M/I:  Overall, how was your experience with M/I Homes? Did you get to pick out your homesite and the floorplan you wanted to build, or had the home already been started?

T&L: We had a great experience in all aspects of the home purchase.  Our home was a spec house that was move-in ready so not a lot of choices from us but couldnt be happier with the end product.

M/I: Do you have any fun memories from the buying / building process?

T&L: This home was a spec home so we were actually not a part of the building process,  but we have been very pleased with the outcome of our home.

M/I: Was there something about your home that made you immediately know you wanted to move in?

T&L: Yes, we loved that it was a brand new home as well as the common area and gardens with a pond make our community, English Rows, so unique and beautiful.

M/I: What do you like about your neighborhood / community?

T&L: Again, the common area is very inviting.  We have frequent outings with all the neighbors.  It is a very mixed community with everything from empty nesters to brand new families – something for everyone.  We were new to the area and this community fit our needs perfectly.

M/I:  Anything you would recommend to someone looking for a new home?

T&L: We would definitely recommend looking at an M/I home – their diversity in everything from single family homes to condos and townhomes, with quality building,  is wonderful.

M/I:  What is your favorite memory in your new home thus far?

T&L: The community get togethers, especially the summer Regatta where the “boys” were able to race their remote control boats.

M/I: What is your favorite space in your new home? Do you have any pictures of that space you would like to share?

T&L: There are many spaces that we love but have really enjoyed the front porch (with a couple rocking chairs) and the front living area.  Both areas give us great views of the garden and pond.

M/I:  What was something that surprised you the most with building / moving into a new home?

T&L: The great sense of community and how smooth and quick the closing process was with M/I Financial.

M/I: Any suggestions you would give to someone building a new home with M/I Homes

T&L: Customer service has been amazing – any needs you may have with a M/I home will be addressed. We are now at our 1 year anniversary and the customer service has continued.

M/I: Any additional items / stories you would like to share about your new home?

T&L: We downsized our home (by half) and have found this is perfect for our needs, very quiet, energy efficient and great location.

**Tina and Lorenzo purchased their new townhome in our English Rows community in Naperville, Illinois in September of 2015.  They enjoy spending time in the community with their neighbors, as well as relaxing on their front porch of their new home.  They have 2 children and have been married for over 34 years!

M/I Homes: Is this your first M/I Home and what convinced you to choose M/I Homes over another builder?

Tom & Maureen: Yes, this was our first M/I Homes experience. We worked with a Realtor to help us find our ideal retirement home. After seeing several homes, we preferred the open floorplan of the Newport more than any other we had seen. Also, the New Home Consultant Michael Colo and later, Beth Vogl, were great. They were very nice, helpful, and informative.

M/I: Are you happy with how your home turned out?

T & M: Yes, the home has worked out well for us. There are some items that we will have to go back and do on our own but we are very impressed with our home overall. The space has worked out well; we have our things laid out where we like them. We purchased some new furniture and we were able to put our own touch on it so that it is different from the place we came from and it is very enjoyable.

M/I: What is the name of your floorplan and what features of your home do you especially love?

T&M: The Newport– We loved this ranch plan immediately. It was perfect because we knew we did not want a two-level home. We are able to get around well but wanted a home that was prepared for 15+ years down the road. We loved the open concept of the kitchen flowing to living room. We came from a condominium so space was very important to us. It was also great to have the master bedroom on one side and the three secondary rooms on the opposite side of the home.

M/I: Overall, how was your experience with M/I Homes?  Did you get to pick out your homesite and the floorplan you wanted to build, or had the home already been started?

T&M: Our overall experience was positive, our community had some restraints on interior design choices at the time but the individuals made up for it. Customer service was and continues to be spectacular. Kelly in the Charlotte Design Center was able to make a lot of our interior desires happen and she was very professional, Dax, our Personal Construction Manager had great communication with us, and Beth was the helping hand along the way. We were able to pick a homesite and we chose one that backed up to woods.

M/I: Do you have any fun memories from the buying / building process?

T&M: Our homebuilding experience was probably different from most because we were relocating from Boston. We only came down to Fort Mill twice and that was the Design Center appointment and Closing. Everything else was done remotely. Dax would walk through the house with his iPhone showing us the progress. Once they began construction, we could visit the website and see the progress which was helpful.

M/I: Was there something about your home that made you immediately know you wanted to move in?

T&M: We really liked the Newport floorplan and the community. The floorplan flows from the kitchen, to the great room, out onto the deck giving us maximum space when entertaining. Nobody feels overcrowded and if guests want to step outside, they can do that.

M/I: What do you like about your neighborhood / community?

T&M: We had two sets of friends that moved to the Fort Mill area before us. When we came to visit them, we loved the area and started looking at the quality of homes that you could get for your money and decided this was the community for us. It isn’t a huge community which we liked and we also liked that it was new. It has made it easy to make friends and know everyone in the neighborhood. There is another couple in Sutton Mill that we have become close to and several others who are friendly acquaintances. The people have been very friendly and daily walks with our dog, Savannah, has allowed us to meet many people. We love that the community is diverse and that there are young families, retired families, and everyone in between.

M/I: Anything you would recommend to someone looking for a new home?

T&M: Take in consideration the lifestyle you’re looking for as far as location. It is important to see what surrounds you and if it matches your interests. Also, make sure it fits not only your current needs but your potential needs in the future.

M/I: What is your favorite memory in your new home thus far?

T&M: Getting all the rooms painted was very exciting for us. We painted ourselves and it gave the home a nice personal touch.

M/I: What is your favorite space in your new home?  Do you have any pictures of that space you would like to share?

T&M: There are a lot of them. The deck is lovely. We asked for and got permission to put in a larger deck as part of the construction process. So it is quite large and it looks out onto the woods. It’s really quite nice, especially as the weather gets a little cooler. We sit out and eat breakfast and dinner out there a lot.  It is also good for entertaining, which we do a frequently.

M/I: Any suggestions you would give to someone building a new home with M/I Homes?

T&M: Aside from assessing your individual needs and making sure the location fits your interests, figure out what you want interior-wise and make sure that the homebuilder and community you choose offers it. We dove in head first and fortunately it worked out in our favor. Also, take a look online to figure out what you like because the Design Center consultation can be an overwhelming experience. We narrowed down our options before our appointment to ensure we could pick everything out in a day.

M/I: Any additional items / stories you would like to share about your new home?

T&M: We’ve been very happy in the home. The space has worked out well for us. Now that we’ve got everything laid out, we have our own touch on it so that it is different. We’ve explored the area and there are a lot of good restaurants.

**Tom and Maureen Carter recently retired from Massachusetts to South Carolina.  They are very pleased with their decision on relocating to the Fort Mill area. They spend time hanging out with friends, trying local restaurants, walking their dog Savannah, and Maureen has a passion for designing custom jewelry, which they have dedicated a room in their home to.
