Happy Homeowners: The Eckart Family

This new “Happy Homeowners Interview” features The Eckart family, who built their new home in Indianapolis, IN.  Read below to hear about Eckart’s homebuilding journey with M/I Homes!

M/I Homes: Is this your first M/I Home and what convinced you to choose M/I Homes over another builder?

Kelly and Paul Eckart:  Yes, this is our first M/I home. We chose M/I homes because we were highly impressed with the quality of the homes.  Everything from the materials used to the well-thought out floor plans.  From the minute we first walked in to an M/I home, we knew this was the builder for us.  Having previously built with a builder where almost everything was considered an upgrade, we were impressed with the items that were considered “standard” in M/I homes.

M/I: Are you happy with how your home turned out?

KE: We absolutely LOVE our home and wouldn’t change a single thing!

M/I: What is the name of your floorplan and what features of your home do you especially love?

KE: We chose the Clayton which in our opinion is the best floor plan that we have ever seen in a new home build. There is no wasted space and the entire layout flows nicely.  We love our hardwood floors.  We love the openness of our kitchen/family room area. We also love the many windows throughout our home that give us great views year-round.

M/I: Overall, how was your experience with M/I Homes?  Did you get to pick out your homesite and the floorplan you wanted to build, or had the home already been started?

KE:  Our experience with M/I homes was nothing but the best! We did get to choose our floor plan and homesite.  Leslie was the very first M/I employee that we came into contact with and she is the absolute best @ her job!  She was SO very personable and knew the neighborhood as well as many of the families already living here.  She was such a help to us.  Addie (our sales rep) helped in so many ways – navigating all the many decisions we were faced with as new homeowners and was a constant source of encouragement/information throughout the entire process.  Our construction manager Chuck was so good at walking us through the building process and calling us once a week to keep us up-to-date on what was happening with the build.  All of these people helped make the entire process enjoyable.

M/I:  Do you have any fun memories from the buying / building process?

KE:  We were so anxious for our home to finally start being built – it was hard to have patience. Because we lived close, we were able to drive out to our homesite frequently to see the daily/weekly progress being made.  It was so exciting when the frame went up and we could actually walk through all of the rooms.  Also, seeing what our views would be from each window was exciting as well.

M/I:  Was there something about your home that made you immediately know you wanted to move in?

KE:  From the moment the frame went up, then the drywall, then the cabinets, etc. we were able to really visualize our family living in these spaces and the memories we would soon be making together.

M/I:  What do you like about your neighborhood / community?

KE:  We have the best neighborhood in the greater Indianapolis area hands down! We love the fact that it is a smaller neighborhood – that actually started out as a custom home built neighborhood.  We have a great walking trail that goes around our neighborhood and provides a great way to get to know all of our neighbors.  We also had a block party this past spring that over half of our neighborhood attended.  Each month we have a men’s night out and women’s day out.  Our neighborhood exemplifies a great community where people know each other and care about each other.

M/I:  Anything you would recommend to someone looking for a new home?

KE:  Definitely talk to people about their experience with any builder you are considering. Also, visit model homes and look at the quality of materials they use on their homes inside and out.  Look at the overall feel/look of the neighborhood.

M/I:  What is your favorite memory in your new home thus far?

KE:  Hosting our middle daughter’s wedding shower this past summer. Also, the first Thanksgiving and Christmas we enjoyed in our new home. We look forward to making so many memories with our family and friends many years in to the future.

M/I:  What is your favorite space in your new home?  Do you have pictures you would like to share?

KE:  We have several favorite spaces in our new home! We LOVE our kitchen – especially the big island where our kids like to gather when they are home visiting.  We also love our family room and the beautiful views we have out our windows.  Our dining room is another favorite as well. We love to sit on our front porch in the morning and watch the sun come up.  In the near future, we hope to build a patio/deck and enjoy our evenings watching the beautiful sunsets as well!

M/I:  Anything else you think we should know about your experience or your home?

KE:  Overall, our experience with M/I homes has been excellent. There are honestly not any negative experiences that we had throughout this process.  Any minor issues that arose were immediately addressed and taken care of.  This was our second home to build and our experience with M/I was nothing at all like our first home building experience.  It was SO much better.  This is a professional company that truly cares about the families buying/building their homes and we saw that caring attitude in every M/I employee we came in contact with – especially Leslie, Addie and Chuck!

Happy Homeowners: The Mullis Family

This new “Happy Homeowners Interview” features The Mullis Family, who built their new home in Charlotte, NC.  Read below to hear about Mullis’ homebuilding journey with M/I Homes!

Mullis 3

M/I Homes: Is this your first M/I Home and what convinced you to choose M/I Homes over another builder?

Adam and Katie Mullis: Yes, the biggest factor was location with this particular neighborhood. We love Cornelius. We loved being close to the greenway and knowing that nothing would be built behind our property. As a realtor myself, while showing clients this neighborhood, I got to see all of the different floorplans and I fell in love with the wide range of options.

M/I: Are you happy with how your home turned out?

A&K: Yes, we love our home and are very satisfied with our decision.

M/I: What is the name of your floorplan and what features of your home do you especially love?

A&K: Witley C. We were anxious because we didn’t get a chance to see a model of our home before building. We only had the collateral to look at so we took a big leap of faith when choosing this floorplan and we’re so glad we did. This floorplan is perfect for entertainment.

Wiltley

M/I: Overall, how was your experience with M/I Homes?

A&K: Our overall experience was positive. Our closing date was later than expected but being in this business myself, I understood that it happens. Most importantly, when we did have any concerns we were able to express them with our New Home Consultant and our Construction Manager and they turned everything around. Having open communication was essential during the building process.

M/I: Do you have any fun memories from the buying / building process?

A&K: We loved the design center experience.  It can be overwhelming because though M/I Homes is not a custom builder, it feels like it is at times because there are so many options to choose from. You have to have an idea of what you want before walking in because there are so many options.

M/I: Was there something about your home that made you immediately know you wanted to move in?

A&K: I was ready to move in after the design center appointment. It really gets you excited to see your home. You have all these ideas in your head and saved pins from Pinterest but you still wonder how everything is going to look when it’s put together.  Another moment that excited us was when the drywall came in. Even when your home is just in framing you start getting the visual.

M/I: What do you like about your neighborhood / community?

A&K: Location-which includes the greenway. Towards the end of the building process, we found out Katie was pregnant. With a baby on the way, the schools were a major plus and aside from that the resale value is phenomenal. We also loved that the size of the community is smaller, and not having a pool was actually a positive for us.

M/I: Anything you would recommend to someone looking for a new home?

A&K: Seriously, we recommend M/I Homes. Aside from that, remember patience is a virtue. Keep an open mind because it is a process. Go look at models, pictures, magazines and figure out what works for you. You can go into a model that looks amazing but you need to consider your lifestyle.

M/I: What is your favorite memory in your new home thus far?

A&K: We stressed to our Construction Manager that we had to be in our new home before the holidays and with a week to spare, he did just that. We were able to host both Thanksgiving and Christmas. A huge moment was when we revealed to our family that Katie was pregnant.

M/I: What is your favorite space in your new home?  Do you have any pictures of that space you would like to share?

A&K: Our top two spaces are the kitchen and backyard porch. Our kitchen is absolutely beautiful with white cabinetry, quartz countertops, and gray ceramic tile backsplash. And the view from our backyard porch is the perfect place for relaxing or entertaining. Our future favorite space is the bar that we will be building. It is going to be amazing.

M/I: What was something that surprised you the most with building / moving into a new home?

A&K: The number of decisions you get to make was surprising. It felt like we were building a custom home.

M/I: Any suggestions you would give to someone building a new home with M/I Homes?

A&K: Trust that M/I Homes has good intentions. Be patient and honest. There were bumps in the road for us, but instead of showing up angry or yelling, we expressed concerns and always found a solution. It’s a team effort between you, the buyer and M/I. We feel that M/I truly wants to make the customer happy.

M/I: Any additional items / stories you would like to share about your new home?

A&K:

  • When you get hardwood floors, you’ll have to sweep a lot.
  • Keep in mind you’re the first to move into your home which is great, but you’re also the first to test everything and watch the home go through seasonal changes.
  • The speaker upgrade is worth it. Everyone that comes through from the neighborhood wishes they would have gotten it. We use it every day.
  • When you sign the closing contract, you’re not on your own.

MI-Homes-Powers-family.jpg

M/I Homes: Is this your first M/I Home and what convinced you to choose M/I Homes over another builder?

Cindy Powers: This is my first M/I Home and there were several reasons for the choice. I first looked at a M/I Home in another neighborhood when I wasn’t quite ready to buy, but wanted to start looking around. Patrick was wonderful and treated me like a serious buyer and I immediately fell in love with everything about the home. Fast forward to a year later when I was ready and of course I went back. That neighborhood was full so I went to check out the new one they were working on and I’m SO glad I did! I worked with Patrick again and he was just as great the second time around.

M/I:  Are you happy with how your home turned out?

CP: Absolutely! The details really make all of the difference. My boss has a contractor’s license (not practicing) and came for a walk through before I signed the contract. I just knew he was going to be nit-picky but he just kept saying how well-built it was and how much he liked it.

M/I:  What is the name of your floorplan and what features of your home do you especially love?

CP:  My floorplan is the Andover II. I love how spacious it is–especially the layout from the kitchen to the living room. I also love the two huge closets in my bedroom and the spacious shower.

M/I:  Overall, how was your experience with M/I Homes?  Did you get to pick out your homesite and the floorplan you wanted to build, or had the home already been started?

CP:  My home was pretty much finished the first time that I saw it, but I wouldn’t change a thing! The features and colors are just perfect. I even love the color of the outside!

M/I:  Do you have any fun memories from the buying / building process?

CP:  The whole process went super fast and I’m glad for that! It almost felt like a dream from when I wandered in to take a look to waking up every morning in my new home.

M/I:  Was there something about your home that made you immediately know you wanted to move in?

CP:  Yes, the quality. It is so much nicer than anything else that I had looked at in the area. M/I Homes made it easy to become a reality.

M/I: What do you like about your neighborhood / community?

CP:  I really like the layout of the neighborhood and the fact that the beautiful pool just happens to be right in my backyard! The community is great—I love to walk and I am walking distance from several shops and restaurants. The interstate access is super convenient as well.

M/I:  Anything you would recommend to someone looking for a new home?

CP:  I would highly recommend M/I Homes due to their customer service as well as the fact that they handle everything for you! I didn’t have to search out a separate mortgage lender or closer; they even recommended a homeowner’s insurance agent that was just as wonderful. She already knew what they needed and took care of it all. The whole process was extremely smooth.

M/I:  What is your favorite memory in your new home thus far?

CP:  My favorite memory has been decorating the new space. It’s fun to bring the beautiful space to life.

M/I:  What is your favorite space in your new home?  Do you have any pictures of that space you would like to share?

CP:  I love how bright and airy the whole home is and I especially love the window in the bonus room, which is perfect for a reading nook. I don’t have pictures of that space yet because I am searching out the perfect comfy seating for that area.  When I find it I will most likely never leave!

M/I:  What was something that surprised you the most with building / moving into a new home?

CP:  I wouldn’t say it surprised me, but I love the fact that each and every thing is being used by me for the first time! Everything is so clean and shiny.

M/I:  Any additional items / stories you would like to share about your new home?

CP:  I just want to reiterate the customer service aspect. Patrick, our New Home Consultant, worked hard for me and was a joy to work with. When I did my walk-through with Al he was meticulous and thorough. From the beginning through move-in, everything went so smoothly.  Thank you M/I Homes!

Happy Homeowners: The Morlan Family

This new “Happy Homeowners Interview” features The Morlan Family, who recently built their new home in Orlando.  Read below to hear about Morlan’s homebuilding journey with M/I Homes!

Picture1.png

M/I Homes:  Is this your first M/I Home and what convinced you to choose M/I Homes over another builder?

Angelia Morlan: This is our second M/I home.  Our first home was an M/I Home.  It was about a year old when we bought it and we lived in it for 13 years.  We knew when we were ready for a new home, we wanted M/I Homes to build it again.  We never had any problems with our first home and knew that M/I Homes built a good, solid home.  We did not even consider another builder.

M/I: Are you happy with how your home turned out?

AM: Yes!  This is absolutely our dream home.  We decided to build from the ground up so we could get everything we wanted.  We have been in our new home for almost 2 months now and still can’t believe it is really ours.  You will hear the words “I love our house” several times a week as we arrive home from work or eating out.  We are taking our time decorating each room and enjoying every minute!

M/I: What is the name of your floorplan and what features of your home do you especially love?

AM: The floorplan we chose is called the Essex.  It has 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, and a bonus room on the second level.  We love the layout of the home and the great use of space utilized in this floorplan.  As far as features go, there are so many.  The one great thing we found with building with M/I Homes is that so many features that one may consider an upgrade are already included in the base model of any of the floorplans in our community.  We loved the brick pavers on the driveway and back patio, granite counter tops in the kitchen and master bath, the covered lanai, and the stone accent on the exterior.  These were not upgrades but came standard on the house.  Other features that we love include the master suite which is the size of a small apartment with a huge walk in closet and master bath.  We also love the large open living room, kitchen, and dining area with so many windows and a panoramic view of the golf course and tree line behind us.

M/I: Overall, how was your experience with M/I Homes? Did you get to pick out your home site and the floorplan you wanted to build, or had the home already been started?

AM: This was not our first experience living in an M/I Home, but it was our first experience building from the ground up.  It really was one of the best experiences we have ever had when it comes to building and buying a home.  We loved that we got to pick out the floorplan and the home site.  We actually looked at several M/I Home communities in our area but we kept coming back to Serenity at Redtail because the views were amazing.  Honestly, every home in the community has no one behind them and a lovely view of either a common area filled with beautiful trees, a lake, or the golf course.  We picked a lot with a view of Redtail golf course.  The best part is we get to see the sunrise to our left and the sunset to our right from our back lanai.  I am addicted to sunset pictures and have already taken quite a few.

M/I: Do you have any fun memories from the buying / building process?

AM: We loved visiting the construction site every week.  We could really see the quality of the work going into the house from the inside out.  Several times my husband and I brought our lawn chairs and sat on the back patio, watched the sunset, and talked about how we would decorate our new home.  We also loved visiting with Linda, our M/I Homes Sales Associate.  It was also a lot of fun working with Julie at the Design Center.  She had great ideas in interior design and really helped to make our vision of our dream home a reality.

M/I: What do you like about your neighborhood / community?

AM: The views are stunning.  A sense of peace fills you as soon as you drive in the neighborhood.  There is always a breeze and it just feels good to be there whether we are inside of our home or walking around the neighborhood.  We love seeing the wildlife almost on a daily basis.  We love that we can walk out of our back door and are steps away from the golf course.  We love that we feel like we are on vacation. We are away from all of the hustle and bustle of the city, but still close enough to entertainment and shopping.

M/I: Anything you would recommend to someone looking for a new home?

AM: Really look at the community you are considering to buy a home in.  M/I Homes does a great job with not just the quality of the construction of the home, but also with what is around your new home. We have beautiful trees, a golf course, and beautiful common areas for everyone in the community to enjoy.

M/I: What is your favorite memory in your new home thus far?

AM: We moved in the day before Thanksgiving.  Our neighbor, next door, invited us to spend the day with them since they knew we would be moving. It was great to enjoy a wonderful meal with them and to get to know them.  We feel very lucky that they are our neighbors.  We also will never forget spending our first Christmas in our new home.

M/I:  What is your favorite space in your new home? Do you have any pictures of that space you would like to share?

AM: My husband and son would say the man cave, AKA bonus room, it’s their favorite room in the house.  My favorite space is the back patio because of the amazing view.  I sit out there every evening.  I also really love our master suite.

M/I: What was something that surprised you the most with building/moving into a new home?

AM: I was surprised at how involved M/I Homes and our building superintendent allowed us to be.  We could come by and walk through the house anytime we wanted to and could ask questions and give input along the way.

M/I: Any suggestions you would give to someone building a new home with M/I Homes?

AM: Take a lot of pictures during the building process.  It is so neat to go back and look through them once you are in your home.  It was also helpful to have the pictures as a resource when making decorating decisions.

M/I: Any additional items / stories you would like to share about your new home?

AM: Our English Bulldog Yeti, loves his new home too.  When we first moved in, he ran laps up and down the long foyer and hallway.  His favorite space is our living room.  He sits in the same spot each night and watches TV with us.  He also enjoys sitting on the patio and watching the golfers and the Sandhill Cranes walk by.

The Overlooked Entryway Elements Your Space is Missing

Whether you love entertaining, have kids who always have friends over, or simply want a welcoming space to step into every day, revamping your entryway is the perfect way to start 2017. The entryway is where the interior of your home makes its first impression, so creating a livable and welcoming space is key. Here we’re discussing the five must-have—but often overlooked—details of creating a stellar entryway space.

  1. An Area Rug

Area rugs in any part of the home lay down the foundation for good design, but this is especially true in your entryway. This space is the first glimpse of your personal style that guests see when they step into your home, so laying a fabulous foundation underfoot is essential! If you have a narrow entryway, a stunning runner in a fun pattern or interesting weave is sure to please. Have more room to play? Consider layering a hide over a jute or sisal rug for an instant dose of style.

  1. Lots of Lighting

Lighting is essential in every room, but the entryway is where you can add in the awe factor. Yes, layers of fabulous lighting can get a little pricey, but it is so worth it. To start, find a chandelier or pendant fixture that sets the scene as your focal point. Next, add in a pair of table lamps perched on a nearby console. Lastly, if your entryway has room, consider installing recessed lighting leading to the next space in your home. The different layers of lighting create a warm and welcoming ambiance.

  1. A Unique Piece

Now that you have coziness underfoot and lots of lighting above, it’s time to sprinkle in a little more of your personality. Entryways are generally dull areas because people don’t linger there as often as they do the living area or kitchen. However, adding in a bright and beautiful focal point, like a unique piece of art, a wall tapestry or a mirror, will have your guests admiring your beautiful entryway. Place the piece at eye level tucked between the two table lamps on a nearby console, and voila—a stylish statement in no time at all.

  1. Some Seating

While most people don’t perch themselves in the entryway for the duration of their stay, having seating available is a good idea. Though it might be for fashion instead of function, having a stylish seating option near the front door lets your guests know there is ample room to kick up their feet should they need it. In the meantime, style your seating by placing a tray filled with books, accessories, candles and other items of interest atop its cushion and use it as a vignette until it’s needed again. Our favorite options include upholstered benches and ottomans featuring hidden storage.

  1. A Drop Zone

While “drop zone” may not be a term you’re familiar with, the concept is something that we all need. Whether you’re entering or exiting your space, you will most likely reach for your phone (or the charger), your keys, your wallet and other knick-knacks that could come in handy throughout the day. For these miscellaneous, yet very important items, you’ll need a drop zone. On top of the nearby console table with the two table lamps and stunning statement art, add a set of trays, key holder, jar or stylish box to act as your drop zone, holding your nearest and dearest treasures until they need to be picked up or used again.

Are these five pieces in your entryway already? Which other essentials would you recommend for a stylish, welcoming space?
