The Overlooked Entryway Elements Your Space is Missing

Whether you love entertaining, have kids who always have friends over, or simply want a welcoming space to step into every day, revamping your entryway is the perfect way to start 2017. The entryway is where the interior of your home makes its first impression, so creating a livable and welcoming space is key. Here we’re discussing the five must-have—but often overlooked—details of creating a stellar entryway space.

  1. An Area Rug

Area rugs in any part of the home lay down the foundation for good design, but this is especially true in your entryway. This space is the first glimpse of your personal style that guests see when they step into your home, so laying a fabulous foundation underfoot is essential! If you have a narrow entryway, a stunning runner in a fun pattern or interesting weave is sure to please. Have more room to play? Consider layering a hide over a jute or sisal rug for an instant dose of style.

  1. Lots of Lighting

Lighting is essential in every room, but the entryway is where you can add in the awe factor. Yes, layers of fabulous lighting can get a little pricey, but it is so worth it. To start, find a chandelier or pendant fixture that sets the scene as your focal point. Next, add in a pair of table lamps perched on a nearby console. Lastly, if your entryway has room, consider installing recessed lighting leading to the next space in your home. The different layers of lighting create a warm and welcoming ambiance.

  1. A Unique Piece

Now that you have coziness underfoot and lots of lighting above, it’s time to sprinkle in a little more of your personality. Entryways are generally dull areas because people don’t linger there as often as they do the living area or kitchen. However, adding in a bright and beautiful focal point, like a unique piece of art, a wall tapestry or a mirror, will have your guests admiring your beautiful entryway. Place the piece at eye level tucked between the two table lamps on a nearby console, and voila—a stylish statement in no time at all.

  1. Some Seating

While most people don’t perch themselves in the entryway for the duration of their stay, having seating available is a good idea. Though it might be for fashion instead of function, having a stylish seating option near the front door lets your guests know there is ample room to kick up their feet should they need it. In the meantime, style your seating by placing a tray filled with books, accessories, candles and other items of interest atop its cushion and use it as a vignette until it’s needed again. Our favorite options include upholstered benches and ottomans featuring hidden storage.

  1. A Drop Zone

While “drop zone” may not be a term you’re familiar with, the concept is something that we all need. Whether you’re entering or exiting your space, you will most likely reach for your phone (or the charger), your keys, your wallet and other knick-knacks that could come in handy throughout the day. For these miscellaneous, yet very important items, you’ll need a drop zone. On top of the nearby console table with the two table lamps and stunning statement art, add a set of trays, key holder, jar or stylish box to act as your drop zone, holding your nearest and dearest treasures until they need to be picked up or used again.

Are these five pieces in your entryway already? Which other essentials would you recommend for a stylish, welcoming space?

M/I Homes: Is this your first M/I Home and what convinced you to choose M/I Homes over another builder?

Tom & Maureen: Yes, this was our first M/I Homes experience. We worked with a Realtor to help us find our ideal retirement home. After seeing several homes, we preferred the open floorplan of the Newport more than any other we had seen. Also, the New Home Consultant Michael Colo and later, Beth Vogl, were great. They were very nice, helpful, and informative.

M/I: Are you happy with how your home turned out?

T & M: Yes, the home has worked out well for us. There are some items that we will have to go back and do on our own but we are very impressed with our home overall. The space has worked out well; we have our things laid out where we like them. We purchased some new furniture and we were able to put our own touch on it so that it is different from the place we came from and it is very enjoyable.

M/I: What is the name of your floorplan and what features of your home do you especially love?

T&M: The Newport– We loved this ranch plan immediately. It was perfect because we knew we did not want a two-level home. We are able to get around well but wanted a home that was prepared for 15+ years down the road. We loved the open concept of the kitchen flowing to living room. We came from a condominium so space was very important to us. It was also great to have the master bedroom on one side and the three secondary rooms on the opposite side of the home.

M/I: Overall, how was your experience with M/I Homes?  Did you get to pick out your homesite and the floorplan you wanted to build, or had the home already been started?

T&M: Our overall experience was positive, our community had some restraints on interior design choices at the time but the individuals made up for it. Customer service was and continues to be spectacular. Kelly in the Charlotte Design Center was able to make a lot of our interior desires happen and she was very professional, Dax, our Personal Construction Manager had great communication with us, and Beth was the helping hand along the way. We were able to pick a homesite and we chose one that backed up to woods.

M/I: Do you have any fun memories from the buying / building process?

T&M: Our homebuilding experience was probably different from most because we were relocating from Boston. We only came down to Fort Mill twice and that was the Design Center appointment and Closing. Everything else was done remotely. Dax would walk through the house with his iPhone showing us the progress. Once they began construction, we could visit the website and see the progress which was helpful.

M/I: Was there something about your home that made you immediately know you wanted to move in?

T&M: We really liked the Newport floorplan and the community. The floorplan flows from the kitchen, to the great room, out onto the deck giving us maximum space when entertaining. Nobody feels overcrowded and if guests want to step outside, they can do that.

M/I: What do you like about your neighborhood / community?

T&M: We had two sets of friends that moved to the Fort Mill area before us. When we came to visit them, we loved the area and started looking at the quality of homes that you could get for your money and decided this was the community for us. It isn’t a huge community which we liked and we also liked that it was new. It has made it easy to make friends and know everyone in the neighborhood. There is another couple in Sutton Mill that we have become close to and several others who are friendly acquaintances. The people have been very friendly and daily walks with our dog, Savannah, have allowed us to meet many people. We love that the community is diverse and that there are young families, retired families, and everyone in between.

M/I: Anything you would recommend to someone looking for a new home?

T&M: Take in consideration the lifestyle you’re looking for as far as location. It is important to see what surrounds you and if it matches your interests. Also, make sure it fits not only your current needs but your potential needs in the future.

M/I: What is your favorite memory in your new home thus far?

T&M: Getting all the rooms painted was very exciting for us. We painted ourselves and it gave the home a nice personal touch.

M/I: What is your favorite space in your new home?  Do you have any pictures of that space you would like to share?

T&M: There are a lot of them. The deck is lovely. We asked for and got permission to put in a larger deck as part of the construction process. So it is quite large and it looks out onto the woods. It’s really quite nice, especially as the weather gets a little cooler. We sit out and eat breakfast and dinner out there a lot.  It is also good for entertaining, which we do a frequently.

M/I: Any suggestions you would give to someone building a new home with M/I Homes?

T&M: Aside from assessing your individual needs and making sure the location fits your interests, figure out what you want interior-wise and make sure that the homebuilder and community you choose offers it. We dove in head first and fortunately it worked out in our favor. Also, take a look online to figure out what you like because the Design Center consultation can be an overwhelming experience. We narrowed down our options before our appointment to ensure we could pick everything out in a day.

M/I: Any additional items / stories you would like to share about your new home?

T&M: We’ve been very happy in the home. The space has worked out well for us. Now that we’ve got everything laid out, we have our own touch on it so that it is different. We’ve explored the area and there are a lot of good restaurants.

**Tom and Maureen Carter recently retired from Massachusetts to South Carolina.  They are very pleased with their decision on relocating to the Fort Mill area. They spend time hanging out with friends, trying local restaurants, walking their dog Savannah, and Maureen has a passion for designing custom jewelry, which they have dedicated a room in their home to.

Happy Homeowners: The Hold Family

M/I Homes: Is this your first M/I Home and what convinced you to choose M/I Homes over another builder?

Johnna Hold: This is our first home with M/I and it was an easy decision. We looked at as many builders in our area as possible and the second we stepped into the M/I Homes model we knew it was a perfect fit for us. The other builders were offering “upgrades” that M/I was offering as items that were already included in the base price. There was a clean and classic, yet modern feel to what was being offered.

M/I: Are you happy with how your new home turned out?

JH: We are so happy with our home! We have been in one year and not one day goes by that we aren’t thrilled with our choice of building with M/I Homes.

M/I: What is the name of your floorpan and what features of your home do you especially love?

JH: We chose the Callahan and could not love it more. We love the layout and the large rooms. When you walk in, the entryway is large and feels so welcoming.

M/I: Overall, how was your experience with M/I Homes?  Did you get to pick out your homesite and the floorplan you wanted to build, or had the home already been started?

JH: We had an incredible experience with the process from start until finish. We had several lots to choose from that could accommodate our plan and add-ons. We picked out everything from the site to the grout – it was fantastic!

M/I:  Do you have any fun memories from the buying / building process?

JH: We loved stopping by to see the process and watching it come to fruition. Our kids loved walking the slab and envisioning their rooms.

M/I: Was there something about your home that made you immediately know you wanted to move in?

JH: When the floors were put in it felt like home and we wanted to move in right away!

M/I: What do you like about your neighborhood / community?

JH: Our kids go to the school in the neighborhood and walk to and from school. They play in the street with friends and ride their bikes to the pool.

M/I: Anything you would recommend to someone looking for a new home?

JH: Make sure you are getting the smartest fit for your family. Think “long run” when purchasing your home. We thought about how our kids would grow and mature and what would be a wise choice for the long haul in our new home.

M/I: What is your favorite memory in your new home thus far?

JH: Our first Christmas in our new home is my favorite memory.  We are making new memories and starting new traditions. This Christmas we bought a real tree for the first time and it was a wonderful Christmas.

M/I: What is your favorite space in your new home?  Do you have any pictures of that space you would like to share?

JH: Our living room is our favorite gathering spot. It is where we all come together and relax.

M/I: What was something that surprised you the most with building / moving into a new home?

JH: Seeing everything from the ground up is a really neat experience. You have a whole different appreciation for your home. We also love being the original owners.

M/I: Any suggestions you would give to someone building a new home with M/I Homes?

JH: Go for it! We knew we wanted a third car garage and to convert a 1/2 bath into a full bath. Doing that on the front end is much more cost effective than doing it after. Make smart decisions that will add value to your home.  So often people pass up design options with the thought of “we will do it later”. You rarely get around to it – do it now!

**Johnna Hold is one of our wonderful homeowners in our Parkside at Mayfield Ranch community in Austin, Texas.  She has two children, William (12) and Anna (8) with her husband Will.  Will works in the Insurance Education and Johnna is a stay at home mom and home stager (can’t you tell from their beautiful decor?)

Happy Homeowners: The Reynolds Family

Our new Happy Homeowners interview brings us to the Reynolds family in Austin, Texas, who moved into their new M/I home earlier this year! Take a look at their thoughts about the process of buying their new home with M/I Homes!

happyhomeowners_reynoldsfamily

M/I Homes: Is this your first M/I home and what convinced you to choose M/I Homes over another builder?

Donna Reynolds: Yes, this is our first M/I home.  We looked for a house for 6 months and talked to (and looked at) every builder in the area.  This was going to be our forever home so we wanted to make sure it was the right one.  We were impressed with M/I Homes from the very beginning.  Our sales consultant, Ursula Whitworth, was willing to stay to talk to us the first evening we came to look at homes, even when it was time for her to go home.  She was very positive and confident about building of an M/I home and put together a packet for us with homes she thought we might be interested in.  We liked all of the extras that M/I Homes includes, which we learned many builders count as upgrades.

M/I: Are you happy about how your home turned out?

DR: Yes, we love it. We did not build our home from the beginning, but instead bought an inventory home.  It was exactly what we were looking for.

M/I: What is your floorplan called and what features of your home do you especially love?

DR: We bought the Rockport.  We love the openness of the kitchen and living room.  I can be cooking in the kitchen and still watch TV.  We also love the fact that our boys’ bedrooms are in the front of the home and we are in the back.  The master bath is gorgeous and there is a lot of room in the closet.  We also love our bedroom.  It is very spacious and we love the bay window.

M/I: Overall, how was your experience with M/I Homes. Did you pick your lot and floor plan to build the home, or was the home already started for you?

DR: When we initially looked at the house, it wasn’t finished.  That was in January and it was completed in April, so we couldn’t get an exact picture of what it would look like totally finished until then.  When we did, we realized it was the home of our dreams.  It had everything we wanted in a home.

M/I: Was there something about your home that made you immediately know you wanted to move in?

DR: We loved the view from the large windows at the back of the house.  There is a rock wall that has a huge tree in a park across the street with a fountain, which is gorgeous. That is partly what sold my husband on the house.  He also has a beautiful view from his study and our bedroom which is in the back of the home as well.

M/I: What do you like about your neighborhood / community?

DR: We absolutely love this neighborhood.  Everyone is very nice.  It is awesome to be one of the first families to move in, as we love seeing other families move into this awesome neighborhood.  We are proud to live in Palmera Ridge!

M/I: Anything you would recommend to someone looking for a new home?

DR: If you’re looking for a new home in Austin, check with Ursula at the model home in Palmera Ridge. She is awesome.  You won’t feel pressured to buy and she is more than happy to answer questions you might have.  She will spend all the time you need to help you find the right home.

M/I: What is your favorite memory in your new home thus far?

DR: We love sitting on our back porch and watching the stars at night.  For the 4th of July, we could see fireworks in all directions lighting up the night sky.  It was awesome.

Also, just being with family in the house, eating dinner and watching a movie or football with the boys.

home

The Reynolds are ready for Halloween!

M/I: What is your favorite space in your new home?

DR: It is really hard to say.  We love the openness of the kitchen and living room area.  I can cook and watch TV at the same time. My husband loves his office.  I love the kitchen.  We truly just love it all!

M/I: What was something that surprised you the most with building a new home?

DR: We were very pleased with everyone we came in contact with who worked for M/I Homes.  From Ursula (the New Home Consultant we first met at the model home), to Kris Rowe (the closer on our home), to Scott Richter (who did a through walk-through before we closed on the home), everyone was extremely professional and helpful with any questions we had.  I can’t say enough good things about M/I Homes.  They are certainly top notch in our book and I would highly recommend them to anyone I know looking for a new home.

M/I:  Any suggestions you would give for someone building a new home with M/I Homes?

DR: Definitely consider M/I Homes in your home buying process.  We originally didn’t want to build and feel like we made the right decision with picking an inventory home.  We looked for six months for the right home and Palmera Ridge was the neighborhood we kept coming back to.  We looked at other quality builders but M/I Homes really was the one we were most impressed with.  We feel you get the most for your money with this builder.

Honestly, there is not a day that goes by that we don’t say “we love our home!”  We find ourselves wanting to come home each day and also on the weekends we end up just wanting to stay at home.  We are excited about the upcoming holidays and being able to entertain and have fun celebrating in our new home.  Thanks M/I Homes for making our dreams come true!

Happy Homeowners: The Lehman Family

IMG_5175Our newest “Happy Homeowners” blog brings us to Colin and Sarah Lehman, who recently built their new home in Raleigh, NC. Sarah and Colin began their journey by choosing their lot and plan, and have shared with us their experience of the whole building process and living in their new M/I home.  Take a look at their experience!

M/I Homes: Is this your first M/I home and what convinced you to choose M/I Homes over another builder?

Sarah & Colin: Yes, this is our first M/I home, and our first home. Initially, we were intrigued by the location of our neighborhood. We were looking to stay in Cary, and stay close to the greenway system and parks. We truly feel we found the best location of townhomes and best quality townhomes in all of Cary.

M/I: Are you happy about how your home turned out?

S/C:  Yes, absolutely!

M/I: What is your floorplan called and what features of your home do you especially love?

S/C: Our floorplan is the Fairview (3 bedroom, 2 ½ bathroom end unit). We love everything about it. Some of our favorite things are the tons of windows, walk-in master shower with bench, huge closet space, built-in bench in the entryway, fireplace, and screened-in porch!

M/I: Overall, how was your experience with M/I Homes. Did you pick your lot and floor plan to build the home, or was the home already started for you?

S/C: We had an extremely positive experience with M/I Homes. We picked our lot and the floor plan. We were the first ones to purchase in our community, so we were able to pick whichever lot we wanted. It was great to get in early, because we ended up getting a HUGE lot for a townhome!

M/I: Do you have any fun memories from building process?

S/C: We loved going over to the building site every Sunday to check out the progress. Going to the design center was also a lot of fun. A little overwhelming at times, but we tried to keep things simple and stick to our budget.

M/I: Was there something about your home that made you immediately know you wanted to move in?

S/C: My husband would say the 2-car garage and open floor plan. But honestly—for me, it was the doors and the built-in bench.

M/I: What do you like about your neighborhood / community?

S/C: It’s been fun to be the first ones in the neighborhood—we get to greet everyone as they move in. We’re looking forward to having more units close and having an established community.

M/I: Anything you would recommend to someone looking for a new home?

S/C: Get in now with mortgage rates the way they are!

M/I: What is your favorite memory in your new home thus far?

S/C: Ahhh- we have so many already! Since this is our first home, some of my favorite memories so far are working together on projects to make it feel ever more like home. Just last weekend we set up a small patio space for a grill. I also loved having our first overnight guests (we’re coming from a small 1 bedroom apartment), and having a house warming party.

IMG_5440

M/I: What is your favorite space in your new home?  Do you have any pictures of that space that you would like to share?

S/C: These are our favorite things:

  • Large, open kitchen made to entertain
  • Open family room where our dog loves to romp
  • Screened in porch to relax after a long day at work
  • Big backyard

M/I: What was something that surprised you the most with building a new home?

S/C: I think the most surprising (and one of the best!) thing was that you didn’t have to break your budget with add-ons in the design center. With M/I Homes, your starting point is such a higher quality in comparison to other builders we found. They don’t trick you into a low base price and unrealistic expectations at the design center.  We got everything we were looking for at a reasonable price.

M/I: Any suggestions you would give for someone building a new home with M/I Homes?

S/C: Enjoy the process!

**Sarah and Colin are high school sweethearts who just celebrated their 3 year wedding anniversary. They are originally from Philadelphia, PA but have lived in Cary for the past 3 years. They have a sweet 1 year old dog named Kona who is there favorite running and mountain biking buddy.
