Home prices: Biggest rise since housing bubble

Home prices continued their recovery, rising 8.1% in January, although a separate report showed a slight slowdown in new-home sales.
The S&P Case-Shiller index, which tracks the 20 largest markets in the nation, showed the biggest year-over-year gain in prices since June 2006.

“This marks the highest increase since the housing bubble burst,” said David Blitzer, chairman of the index committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices.

In a separate government report Tuesday, new homes sold at a 411,000 annual rate in February, down nearly 5% from the January sales pace but up 12% from year-earlier levels. The typical price of a new home sold in the month was $246,800, up about 3% from both the January and a year earlier.

Joseph LaVorgna, chief U.S. economist for Deutsche Bank, said that bad weather in February could be partly responsible for the slowdown in sales. But he said market fundamentals suggest that the market for new-home sales should remain strong.

“Despite the pullback in sales in February, the uptrend in housing remains clearly intact,” he said. He is forecasting even stronger sales in the second half of this year.

Welcome Jerrod Klein to the M/I Homes Indy Team!

Normally when we welcome someoneJerrod to the M/I Homes Indianapolis team, it is for the first time. This situation, however, is unique. We are so excited to welcome back Jerrod Klein! Jerrod is our new Vice President of Sales and Marketing!

This is the same position Jerrod held within the company from 2000 – 2009. M/I Homes Indianapolis is so pleased to have his skill and experience working for our homebuyers again. With more than 23 years of new home construction, sales and marketing experience, Jerrod is goal-oriented and a strong leader- a perfect fit for our sales and marketing team!

Jerrod tells us his favorite memory from his first time with the company was when he worked with M/I Co-Founder Irving Schottenstein in the early 2000’s. Jerrod says he embraced Irving’s contagious passion for quality, customer service and treating customers the right way. Sadly, Irving passed away in 2004, but his ideals are still the foundation of M/I Homes today.

We certainly look forward to sharing many more memories with Jerrod! Welcome back!

We will never pass up an opportunity to praise our very dedicated team at M/I Homes Indianapolis! Today we’re featuring two home sales consultants, Barry Wilkins and Debbie Melloh. This hardworking pair stays busy in our Mapleton at Wynne Farms model home in Avon, a beautiful community with oversized lots and large homes.Together, Barry and Debbie have helped increase sales in this community and fulfilled the dreams of many individuals, couples and families who are now living in their dream homes. Here’s more from this winning team.

1.    How long have you worked with M/I Homes Indianapolis?

 Debbie- I started back in 1989. I’ve been withthe company almost since their first day in Indianapolis! Crazy, right?!

Barry- Five years at M/I Homes and ten totalyears in the real estate industry

2.    What’s your favorite part of your job?

 Debbie– The smiles, anxiety fear, happy tearsand all the other emotions are involved with helping to fulfill the homeowners’dream of building with M/I Homes.

Barry– When I see the smiles pop up in thefaces of the buyers as we work through their concerns and questions.  OnceI get them smiling I know they are comfortable and excited about M/I Homes,working with me and the vision of their new home. I love that feeling!

 3.    What’s been your favorite memory working with an M/I Homeclient?

 Debbie- I have so many great memories it’simpossible to name just one! I can say one of my most accomplished feelingscomes when I work through challenges with customers, whether that’s financingor finding the right community. It is flattering and fulfilling when they letyou know they couldn’t have done it without you.

 Barry- The best memories occur when workingthrough buyers’ challenges. Many of these people didn’t imagine they’d getexactly what they want… and then they do! If it wasn’t for what M/I HomesIndianapolis offers and the knowledge they pass down to us sales reps, thesepeople would not build with us and they’d end up disappointed.

 4.    In your opinion, what’s the best thing about M/IHomes?

 Debbie- There are so many things! I’d say thetireless effort that we as a company put forth to keep the legacy of IrvingSchottenstein alive is great. “Don’t forget to treat my customers right!”

 Barry- The quality! Being able to sleep atnight knowing the product I sell is built better than even buyers demand is agreat feeling. There is quality in construction, a focus on energy efficiency,truly beautiful communities and helpful financial information offered along theway. We truly put the customer first.

 5.    What feedback have you received from clients who havebuilt with M/I?

 Debbie- I hear a lot that the entire process iseasier than people think, which is relieving to them. Also they enjoy theflexibility we have to make changes and accommodate their family and lifestyleis a huge benefit we have over other builders. We get great feedback regardingour design center and the various choices we offer. They also love the supportthey get from our entire staff here in Indy that has a lot of tenure.

 Barry- Clients are very happy with their home!I think they find comfort in the fact that if they need us, we are still thereeven after the sale.

 6.    Why is Mapleton at Wynne Farms a great place forpeople to live?

 Debbie- The neighborhood features spacious homesite sizes and a rural feel despite the fact that you’re still very close toamazing conveniences like shopping and award-winning schools. There’s anelementary and middle school within walking distance!

 Barry- Mapleton is a great reflection of theluxuries of Avon. It offers generous home sites, a nice variety of homes and iscertainly family-friendly. It’s one of those areas where everyone seems to knowone another and they all care for their homes. The neighborhood has characterand a very “at home” feel to it.

Jumping in June…

U.S. home prices rose 2.3% in June in the nation’s largest cities, the fourth straight monthly increase and another sign the housing market might have turned the corner, according to new data released Tuesday.
